Meister Eckhart’s Mysticism and Ours
Rev. Dr. Matthew Fox
June 27, 6:30-9:30pm; June 28-29, 9am-12noon & 1:30-4:30pm
How do we become more mystical and lead others into their mysticism? Why not play with the best, Meister Eckhart, the 14th century mystic, prophet and reformer whose influence has extended from Karl Marx to George Fox, from Jung to Howard Thurman, MLK, Jr., to the women’s movement (Beguines) of his own day. We will explore Eckhart’s appeal and his challenge to our times.

TopThe Apostle Paul: Love Him or Leave Him
Dr. Harry Maier
9 am - 12 noon WEEK ONE & TWO
Full course syllabus
Paul is the apostle most people love to hate. You will revisit the Paul you thought you knew and get to know someone you didn’t. You will locate Paul in the context of the Roman Empire and see how his writings engage the politics and society of his day and how his Gospel was an invitation to women and men to live lives of countercultural witness.
The first week you will encounter women and men who made up Paul’s churches and how Paul formulated his Gospel to make churches a place of God’s welcome.
The second week you will see how Paul’s successors – the authors of Colossian’s, Ephesians, 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus – took the theology, institutions of leadership and church organization of Paul and developed those ideas and social structures for a new generation of believers. You will also look at how Paul’s theology was developed in the second century.
Dr. Harry Maier is Professor of New Testament Studies at Vancouver School of Theology, and author of Apocalypse Recalled: The Book of Revelation after Christendom.
Becoming Fully Human: Genesis 1-11
Dr. Walter Vogels
1:30-4:30 pm
Full course syllabus
Genesis 1-11 holds stories that are considered childish compared to the data of science. However, they touch upon questions fundamental to being human: our relationships with nature, God and others; the origin of suffering, the meaning of life and death, the balance between work and rest. These texts provide the opportunity for different approaches used in biblical studies; historical-critical, feminist, semiotics, and others.
Dr. Walter Vogels is a professor of Biblical Studies in the Faculty of Theology at Saint Paul University in Ottawa. He is a popular lecturer in international universities and institutes.
