The Betrayal of God by Religion: The Struggle and Gift of the Spirit in an Age of Warring Fundamentalisms
The Very Rev. Dr. Alan Jones - Visiting Distinguished Scholar
9:00 am -12:00 noon
Full course syllabus
We will address the reality that we are in the middle of a phony war between two “fundamentalisms”; science and religion. It’s a complicated battle fought on several fronts: the first against a secularist and scientistic academy; the second against mindless religion with its attendant violence; the third against theologians who have bought the secularist vision.
Alan Jones has been Dean of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, CA since 1985. Previously, Dr. Jones served as the Stephen F. Bayne Professor of Ascetical Theology at the General Theological Seminary in New York City from 1972-1982. Founder and first director of the Center for Christian Spirituality at GTS, he is a prominent lecturer in Episcopal and academic circles both nationally and internationally. He is the author of many books, including "Journey into Christ" (1977), "Reimagining Christianity: Reconnect Your Spirit Without Disconnecting Your Mind" (2004), "Seasons of Grace: The Life-Giving Practice of Gratitude" (2003), and "Common Prayer on Common Ground" (2006).

TopA Raw Experience of the Holy: Learning from the Life of Hildegard von Bingen
Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress
1:30-4:30 pm
Full course syllabus
You will study the life of Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179) through four themes: mystical experience through Hildegard’s experience and the eyes of the Christian mystical tradition, nurturing the spirit of God within us, the creative path woven with illness and challenge, and refining the call of the Spirit within our own lives. We will use the labyrinth as an integrative walking meditation.
Lauren Artress is an Episcopal priest, spiritual director, therapist, and author of several books, including Walking a Sacred Path: Rediscovering the Labyrinth as a Spiritual Practice. She is Canon at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, and founder of Veriditas, http://www.veriditas.net

TopEros, Sexuality, and Theology
Dr. Kwok Pui-lan

Why are Christians afraid of Eros? What has sexuality to do with theology? Why is it difficult to talk about Eros and sexuality in the church? This course presents constructive proposals for an embodied and passionate theology. We will explore the meaning of Eros from a cross-cultural perspective, and discuss the relationship between human desire and the desire for God.
