Ancient Voices: Exploring Hebrew Bible Literature and Faith

The Hebrew Bible is full of stories, songs, poems, and proverbs that were written, collected and preserved by ancient writers in order to give witness to their faith in God. This five-part course will introduce the Hebrew Bible by exploring the types of literature these ancient writers used to express their faith.

TopFirst Rites, First Nations: An Introduction to Christian Worship (in conjunction with NMC Summer School)

By tracking the worship practices of Christians during the early Common Era we learn of the incorporation of non- Jewish peoples into what was originally a Jewish movement. This class covers five topics: Time, Space, Christian Initiation, Eucharist and Ordination as they are expressed in early Christian worship. (M.Div. students will have a separate seminar in the afternoon and will not be able to take an afternoon course. The afternoon seminar will look at these issues in the Reformation period (1500-1700) and early Modern period (1700 - 1948).)
Richard Leggett is Professor of Liturgical Studies at Vancouver School of Theology. He has been involved in the Native Ministries Program since 1987 and in Anglican-Lutheran relations in Canada since 1992.

TopA Larger Memory: Connecting to Voices of Local People

Realizing that our lives are vitally connected in a web of relationships, this course will examine how our personal journeys are understood through social and communal readings represented in the voices and visions of minoritized writers in the Pacific West. We will attend to experiences that provide new social/personal awareness through the literary writings of people such as Ronald Takaki, Joy Kogawa, Theresa Cha, Carlos Bulson, and theologians Douglas John Hall and Mary Jo Leddy.
Fumitaka Matsuoka is the Robert Gordon Sproul Professor of Theology and Executive Director, Institute for Leadership Development & the Study of Pacific and Asian North American Religion (PANA Institute) at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California.
Sharon Thornton is Professor of Pastoral Theology at Andover Newton Theological School.

TopThomas Merton: Poet, Monk, Prophet
Paul Pearson with Ron Dart & Lynn Szabo

This course will focus on the life, thought and spirituality of Thomas Merton. Four major areas of his writings will be explored: monastic life and spirituality; Merton the poet, writer and artist; embracing the world (social issues); and dialogue with other faiths.
Paul Pearson is the Director and Archivist for The Thomas Merton Center at Bellarmine University, Louisville, KY.
Ron Dart is Professor of Political Science, Philosophy and Religious Studies at the University College of the Fraser Valley.
Lynn Szabo is Associate Professor and Chair of the English Department at Trinity Western University.
