Kabbalah: A Jewish Theology

Kabbalah ‘received tradition’ is a metaphorical tapestry of Jewish texts, practices, and ideas that invite deep spiritual and theological reflection. Together, we will enter this tapestry, following the shape of its historical development. Using primary and secondary texts along with reflective experiences, we will explore kabbalistic interpretations of creation, God’s nature, prayer, and Hebrew Bible.
Rabbi Laura Duhan Kaplan serves as Rabbi of Or Shalom Synagogue in Vancouver. Previously she was Chair of Philosophy, Coordinator of Women’s Studies, and an awardwinning teacher at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

TopLiving Lightly: Spiritual & Economic Choices for a Sustainable Future

Living into a lighter footprint is a combination of small steps and bold thinking. We will explore our current spiritual, economic and ecological realities with an eye to life-giving, sustainable alternatives. We will invigorate our learning through simple Yoga practices throughout the course time.
Ted Reeve is a religious social ethicist and Program Coordinator, Leadership and Educational Institutions, for the United Church of Canada.
Katharine Vansittart is a certified Yoga and Reiki Instructor. They work together on interfaith, eco-sustainability through the organization Faith & the Common Good.

TopFoundations in Christian Spirituality – Biblical Tradition, Part I

We will be introduced to some of the basic themes of Christian Spirituality in the context of Biblical Theology. Through reflection on personal life stories and knowledge of the Biblical paradigm of sacred journey participants will reflect on the use of the Bible and the nature of spirituality grounded in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
Jim Cruickshank holds a Doctorate from Chicago Theological Seminary. After leaving VST as Vice Principal, he became Dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver and then Bishop of Diocese of Cariboo in 1992.

TopMidrash and the Rabbinic Imagination

What did Satan tell Sarah while Abraham and Isaac were en route to Mt. Moriah? What did Moses see when God transported him centuries forward in time? These questions are part of a vast collection of inventive rabbinic midrash. The course will explore theories and genres of rabbinic midrash while engaging some of the most startling, biblically-inspired literary compositions of the late antique and medieval worlds.
Robert Daum has held the Diamond Chair in Jewish Law and Ethics in the Department of Classical, Near Eastern & Religious Studies at the University of British Columbia since 2002.
