The Rev. Dr. Philip Crowell
Assistant Professor of Ethics

Dr. Crowell holds a Bachelor of Arts (honours), Master of Divinity (honours) from Acadia University, a Master of Arts (Philosophy) from the University of New Brunswick and a Doctor of Philosophy (Philosophy) from the University of Waterloo.

His doctoral dissertation is entitled, Tillich and Gadamer on Relativism: The Hermeneutics of Play and the Double Perspective.

Dr. Crowell has been lecturing in ethics, philosophy, and religious studies since 1986, at Mount Allison University, St. Thomas University, Acadia University and the University of New Brunswick. As well as sitting on Mount Allison University Ethics Research Committee, Dr. Crowell, has for many years served as ethicist for Hospital Ethics Committee
s which involved developing educational processes within the health care context, integrating workshops, seminars and presentations. Philips specialization in biomedical ethics, business ethics, hermeneutics, just war theory and peacemaking ethics has evolved over the last two decades through research and active participation.

Dr. Crowell, an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, is presently on the Church Doctrine Committee for the General Assembly of the national church.

A current writing project is entitled, An Ethical Inquiry: Hermeneutics and the Theological Quest, which develops a hermeneutic process for ethical deliberation. He is a member of the Canadian Bioethics Society engaged in discussions on the impact of new technologies, especially, questions involving transplantation, and end-of-life issues. Also a member of the Society of Christian Ethics involved in working groups on justice and reconciliation.
