12. Lillian Forsyth Scholarship for Church Music

  • May be used for summer study programs, regular diploma or degree courses, or private tuition.
  • Award amount up to $2,000.00
  • Candidates should be active church musicians who have completed their basic musical training.
  • Committee will also consider an application from someone who would benefit form this scholarship but who is not a practicing musician, such as a member of the clergy.

13. P.E.O. International

  • Maintains five educational projects:
    1. P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund – a revolving loan fund established in 1907 to lend money tow worthy women students to assist them in securing a higher education.
    2. Cottey College – fully accredited liberal arts college for women at Nevada, Missouri, owned and operated by the P.E.O. Sisterhood since 1927.P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund – established in 1949 to provide scholarships for international women students to pursue graduate study in the United States and Canada.
    3. P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education – established in 1973 to provide need based grants to women in the United States and Canada whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to support themselves and/or their families.
    4. P.E.O. Scholar Awards – established in 1991 to provide substantial awards to women of the United States and Canada who are pursuing advanced degrees or are engaged in advanced study and research at an accredited institution.

14. McGeachy Senior Scholarship

  • Looking for proposals that identify and study questions seen to be important to the life and faith of the church in our time.
  • The McGeachy senior scholar is expected to express the prophetic vision of the church and to interpret Christ’s call to justice and peace in our pluralistic world. She or he will combine reflection and research with practical action, and communicate the results of this work in a form accessible to the wider church.
  • The scholarship is intended to free a person to use a major block of time for concentrated effort on a project of enduring value to the Church. It is hoped that the award will enhance the life work of the McGeachy scholar at a creative moment in her or his development, and thus yield continuing benefit to the individual and to the community.
  • Open to anyone from any church or country, but the proposal must indicate how the project will address the concerns of the United Church of Canada.
  • Previous awards have ranged from $10,000 to $50,000.
  • Request for Prospectus which gives further details needed by all applicants.
  • Deadline for applications: March 31st. Announcement of recipient is to be made sometime in June.

15. Georgia Harkness Scholarship

  • Eligible to a full time student who must be enrolled in the fall semester.
  • The eligible candidate will be a woman over 35 who has received a bachelor of arts or equivalent degree, is enrolled full-time in a University Senate approved school of theology in the Master of Divinity degree program and who is a CERTIFIED CANDIDATE for ordained ministry as an elder in the United Methodist Church. She must be a certified candidate by May to be eligible for this award. If a student’s district committee will be meeting after our application deadline of March 1st, she should have the committee chairperson indicate on their required reference letter the date the student is expected to receive candidacy status.
  • The program grants a $5,000 award to those who are chosen as Georgia Harkness Scholars. All United Methodist women students who meet the guidelines are equally considered for this award.
  • All United Methodist women students who meet the guidelines are equally considered for this award. They are looking for women who exhibit the qualities of Georgia Harkness: scholarship, spirituality and social justice.

17. The Anglican Foundation of Canada - www.anglicanfoundation.org

  • The Anglican General Bursary Trust – is for theological students studying toward ordination who will be attending a theological college in Canada (bursaries are not given for undergraduate ). It is funded from the Oonah Bishop Fund, the Jean Grant Foundation, Anglican General Bursary Fund and designated bequests from the Woods, Owen, Paterson and the Bishop Marsh funds.
  • The Anglican Graduate Award Trust is for advanced theological study at the post-graduate level with a view to a teaching and research career in a Canadian Anglican Theological school. Applicants are required to have already completed a university degree (B.A. or equivalent) and a professional degree (M.Div. or equivalent) and be ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada. Bursaries are not given for Doctor of Ministry degrees. Applicants should have at least four years professional experience in ordained ministry in a parish.
  • The Catholic Apostolic Universal Trust Fund – also designates funds each year to each of the above trusts.
  • Committee meets in early May and the deadline for receiving application s at the Anglican Foundation office is April 22 each year. Applicants are advised of the results in June and the funds are sent in September to the student at the theological college. 18. The Fund for Theological Education, Inc. – FELLOWSHIPS PLUS

  • Fellowships Plus provides information about financial resources for theological students beyond those offered by FTE and individual theological institutions. Sources of financial assistance in Fellowships Plus can be searched alphabetically, by keyword, and by specific categories. They include aid offered by various church denominations as well as particular resources for women, racial ethnic minorities, undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, postdoctoral, and international students. The resources have been verified with the organization or individual offering the aid. However, details can change, and persons seeking financial aid should keep this is mind when contacting any of these sources. www.thefund.org/programs

19. The BC Paraplegic Foundation

  • Bursaries are available to students who have a physical disability. Bursaries are awarded on merit, with preference given to individuals with a disability. Recipients must be Canadian citizens or Landed immigrants, residents of BC and must be attending/planning to attend a post-secondary educational institution in BC. Applicants who do not plan to attend facilities in BC must submit an explanatory letter. Under exceptional circumstances, the BCPF Bursary Committee may approve an award to a student in an out of Province or a non-Canadian educational facility.

20. Centennial Bursary Fund

  • In 1990, St. George’s United Church established the Centennial Bursary Fund on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. Bursaries starting at $700 per award are granted primarily to candidates for the ministry to assist in completing their educational qualifications for ordination and pastoral ministry.
  • Individual awards, which are granted after careful consideration at the discretion of the Committee, are based upon financial needs of the candidates, their ability and promise.
  • To qualify for assistance, applicants must be either:
    1. Candidates or inquirers for ministry in the United Church of Canada, who are registered in a campus based ordination program at a United Church Theological School.
    2. An ordained minister in the United Church of Canada who is in the active process of post-graduate theological studies.
  • Bursary application form is available in Room 264, Financial Aid Office, which require candidate completion along with letters of recommendation from the Principal of the College and one other member of the faculty.

21. ATLA (American Theological Library Association)

The Publications Committee of the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) invites applications from bibliographers and indexers in the fields of religious studies/theology for the 2005 grant-in-aid award of up to $1,500. The ATLA Bibliography Grant is given annually by the ATLA Publications Committee to one or more bibliographers or indexers to aid in the development of a work that provides access to a significant body of literature within the fields of theological and/or religious studies. The scope, subject matter, length, and format are broadly conceived, with the intent of encouraging bibliographical essays or annotated bibliographies, especially by persons undertaking their first major project in this area. This grant is open to applicants inside and outside of ATLA.

ATLA reserves the right of first refusal for all projects receiving grants. The application deadline is January 15. The recipient of this grant will be selected by the Publications Committee. Applicants will be notified of the decision of the Publications Committee by March 1st. The funding granted will be distributed to the recipient within two weeks of the Committee’s decision.

Applications should contain the following:

  1. date, applicant’s name, address, telephone number, current position, professional experience and educational background;
  2. a description of the project in not more than two typewritten pages including title, purpose, scope, size, format, organization and methodology, an anticipated date of completion, a proposed expense budget (listing other anticipated sources of financial assistance), and proposed plan for publication/presentation/distribution;
  3. two letters of reference, one from a person acquainted with the applicant’s general bibliographical competence, the other from a person acquainted with the applicant’s specific project.
