A landmark event was held in the H.R. MacMillan Library during our annual Native Ministries Summer School on Wednesday, July 11th. The Library was thrilled to announce to a capacity crowd the purchase of a very important resource: the Church Missionary Society Archives Collection on Microfilm: British Columbia & North-West Canada. This microfilm is a valuable resource of primary source research and archival evidence for First Contact, missionary activities, band statistics, key figures, events, and prevailing social attitudes during the colonialization of Western Canada. The archive will be housed at UBC Library (Koerner, 2nd floor) with other microform resources on First Nations history. Numerous First Nations and other dignitaries attended and spoke at the launch, which was also filmed by the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at UBC. This video can be viewed through our Media Centre at http://www.vst.edu/main/media-centre/audio-visual. Also planned is a feature article on this collection for our Fall/Winter edition of Perspectives. Congratulations to our Director of Library Services and all the staff who worked so hard on this major and important acquisition!
