Dear Friends,

September 1! How can it be? The fall term begins and with it a change.

Jeffrey Preiss, who currently works as the Development Associate for Communications and Community Engagement, has decided to move on from VST. As we all know from his unflagging enthusiasm, Jeffrey loves our school and loves us. However, at this juncture in his story, he is feeling called to pursue other opportunities in academic administration. We will miss him but bless him and thank him for all he has given, as he moves on to a new world.

We will say good bye to Jeffrey with a cake at the Principal’s lunch after community worship, Wednesday, September 29. Jeffrey’s last day with us will be September 30.

With love,

Wendy

Harry O. Maier recently submitted his piece on “The Shepherd of Hermas” for the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Bible (forthcoming, 2012). The Shepherd of Hermas is made up of a series of oracles and ethical instructions to a wealthy community of Christians in Rome at the end of the first and the start of the Second Century CE. The Shepherd is one of the longest Christian documents from that period. Hermas was a well-to-do freedperson of his Christian master, Rhoda, and his visions offer important insights into prophetic authority and the status of urban Christianity in Rome.
