Issues in Praxis
September 15; October 6; November 3, 2011
Rev. Janet Gear
This course provides the learner with an opportunity to explore the face of the practice of ministry and the meaning of mission, in the rapidly shifting context of discipleship in the 21st century. Engaging the learner through head, heart and hands, “Issues in Praxis” invites the sojourner to explore the intersection of life and faith, world and church, practice and meaning.

Theology and Doctrine
September 22; September 23, 2011
Rev. Janet Gear
The goal of this course is preparation for learned and able leadership in the United Church of Canada. Within the context of external and internal challenges to the church, the class will provide an arena both to acquire and practice the ability to reflect theologically on the church’s statements of faith (the Doctrine section of the “Basis of Union,” “A Statement of Faith,” a “New Creed,” and “A Song of Faith”) and other doctrinally-based statements and reports. It will provide the forum for articulation of a collective understanding of the purpose of the church and the practice of its ministries. Using pressing issues within the church as a starting place, we will reflect together on the theological resources from which to draw in considering institutional and pastoral life of the church and its public witness. This is a required course for United Church MDiv, DipCS, and Admissions students.

Polity
February 16 – 17, 2012
Rev. Janet Gear
The goal of this course is preparation for learned and able leadership in the United Church of Canada. Using pressing issues within the church as a starting place, the course will provide opportunity to study and reflect together the polity and practices of church governance. There will be a focus on practical issues which call for knowledge of UCC polity. We will review The Manual and other UCC policy documents as well as case studies. Within the context of external and internal challenges to the church, the class will provide an overview of the conciliar governance system and preparation for leadership within that system. This is a required course for United Church MDiv, DipCS, and Admissions students.
