Diploma in Denominational Studies
Overview of Program
The Diploma in Denominational Studies is designed to provide a solid foundation in one of the three supporting denominations at VST – The Anglican Church of Canada, The United Church of Canada and The Presbyterian Church in Canada.
Length of Program
The Diploma in Denominational Studies is an 18-credit hour program. It may be completed within one year of study. In certain cases, Presbyterian students wishing to pursue ordination in the PCC after completing an M.Div elsewhere are required to complete a more substantial Diploma program. Course Requirements for Diploma in Denominational Studies
• HIS500 – Christianity and Judaism in Late Antiquity* (for regular admission students only) (3 credits)
• HIS600 – Canadian History Seminar (3)
• One Elective Course (3)
students who have been required by their denomination to do a program in denominational studies and whose academic background and fitness for ministry have been assessed by the denominational authorities, will do the following in place of HIS500:
• PT610 – Public and Pastoral Leadership: Integration and Formation (3)
Anglican Church Requirements
• SP510 – The Beauty of Holiness: Worship and Spirituality in the Anglican Tradition (3)
• TH652 –We Who Are Many Are One Body: Church and Ministry in the Anglican Tradition (3)
• HIS650 – The Journey of Anglicanism (3)
Presbyterian Church Requirements
• DS510 – PCC Denom Studies: Introduction to PCC Worship, Theological Emphases, Governance and Mission (3)
• DS610 – PCC Denom. Studies: Reformed Worship, Polity and Confessions of Faith (3)
• HIS640 – Reformation History (3)
United Church Requirements
• DS520 – UCC Landmarks and Legacies (1)
• DS521 – UCC Educational Ministries (1)
• DS522 – UCC Worship and Music (1)
• DS523 – UCC Polity (1)
• DS525 – UCC Issues and Praxis (1)
• DS624 – UCC Doctrine (1)
• HIS640 – Reformation History (3)
• Involvement in worship and community life of the denomination at VST is a requirement of this programme. Specifics can be arranged with the relevant Director of Denominational Formation.
Admissions
Students requiring denominational studies at the request of their denomination may complete the Diploma as Special Students and do not have to go through the regular admissions procedure at VST. Applicants must complete the regular admission process if they are not required to complete the Diploma by the denomination.
