The Alliston Foundation supports, among other things, students studying in theological training centres recognized by the United Church of Canada. The fund is administered by members of the congregation of St. John’s United Churches, Alliston, ON.

MARGARET McNAMARA MEMORIAL FUND (MMMF)
Since 1981 the Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund (MMMF), a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, public charity, has awarded scholarships to outstanding women from developing countries, who are completing degrees at US/Canadian universities and are committed to improving the wellbeing of women and children in developing countries. Individual MMMF Scholarships are between $12,000-$15,000 and must be used during the 2011-2012 academic year. The MMMF administers the program with support from volunteers affiliated with the World Bank and the World Bank Family Network (WBFN).

Anniversary Bursary Fund at Eglinton St. George’s United Church
The Anniversary Bursary Fund at Eglinton St. George’s United Church in Toronto awards bursaries to candidates for ministry in the United Church of Canada who are registered in a campus-based Master of Divinity programme of a United Church Theological School. Individual awards of $1,000 may be granted after careful consideration by the Anniversary Bursary Committee. The decision will take account of the financial need of the candidate, their academic achievement and statement of faith.
Application Forms may be obtained from the ESG website, www.esgunited.org. The information will be found under Finance and Stewardship. The deadline for submission each year is October 15. The money is disbursed the end of November.
Knights Templar Educational Foundation
• The Knights Templar Educational Foundation, the first program of its kind, was organized in 1922. Since then, more than $32 million dollars has been loaned to students to complete their last two years of college. This financial assistance is given without regard to race, colour, creed, age or Masonic affiliation.
• In recent years, some Grand Commanderies have also been offering Scholarship Grants to students who are members of Masonic-related Youth Groups.
• Training awards for religious leadership. Eligibility will be determined entirely by the ESTARL committee in each Grand Jurisdiction and each Chapter Under the Jurisdiction of the General Grand Chapter. Recipients for Awards may be chosen as each Jurisdiction’s rules apply.
• All applications must be accompanied by:
- Letter of reference from the Minister of the church the applicant attends.
- Letter of reference from the head of the department in which the applicant is majoring, or the Principal of the High School from which the applicant is graduating, or if changing careers, from latest employer.

- A current picture of applicant or applicant and family may be included.

St. Stephen’s Broadway Foundation Inc.
• Applicants must be members of The United Church of Canada. We regret the need to limit Bursaries to students from Manitoba, Northwestern Ontario and Saskatchewan.
• Applicants must be in, or accepted for entry to, a full time recognized program of study within the United Church of Canada.
• Applicants must complete the Bursary application form in its entirety. Failure to do so will disqualify the application.

• The Command level bursary program has been cancelled effective 2004. Branches and Auxiliaries will continue to provide within their own communities. Students should check with the local Legion Branch in their community. Individual Branches will determine the eligibility requirements for their bursaries.

Karen Stinson Bursary Trust Fund
• Established to celebrate the life of former parish worker Karen Stinson, who was stricken with an aneurysm and died on August 13, 1990 at the age of 32 years.
• Although the Board will make necessary judgments in all cases, the following criteria will apply to awards:
• Applicants must be enrolled in full-time or part-time post-secondary studies.
• Awards will be based upon the following equal criteria: Academic achievement; Christian activities; participation in community; preparation for a career in the field of social services, education, ordained ministry, or related church vocation; financial need.
• The amount of the award may range from $400 – $600, based upon funds available from the interest on the endowment, which will continue to grow as contributions increase. The award will be made on an annual basis, and recipients are eligible to re-apply in subsequent years.

The Ivor Norris Bursary – DPOCS (SEC-ARMY)
• The Ordinariate of the Canadian Forces has sponsored the Ivor Norris Bursary for over twenty-five years. This bursary is awarded to theological students who have had, or have some connection with the Canadian Forces. With the reorganization of Church house the total administration of this bursary program comes under the purview of the Ordinariate itself.

McGeachy Senior Scholarship
• Looking for proposals that identify and study questions seen to be important to the life and faith of the church in our time.
• The McGeachy senior scholar is expected to express the prophetic vision of the church and to interpret Christ’s call to justice and peace in our pluralistic world. She or he will combine reflection and research with practical action, and communicate the results of this work in a form accessible to the wider church.
• The scholarship is intended to free a person to use a major block of time for concentrated effort on a project of enduring value to the Church. It is hoped that the award will enhance the life work of the McGeachy scholar at a creative moment in her or his development, and thus yield continuing benefit to the individual and to the community.

Georgia Harkness Scholarship
• Eligible to a full time student who must be enrolled in the fall semester.
• The eligible candidate will be a woman over 35 who has received a bachelor of arts or equivalent degree, is enrolled full-time in a University Senate approved school of theology in the Master of Divinity degree program and who is a CERTIFIED CANDIDATE for ordained ministry as an elder in the United Methodist Church. She must be a certified candidate by May to be eligible for this award. If a student’s district committee will be meeting after our application deadline of March 1st, she should have the committee chairperson indicate on their required reference letter the date the student is expected to receive candidacy status.
• The program grants a $5,000 award to those who are chosen as Georgia Harkness Scholars. All United Methodist women students who meet the guidelines are equally considered for this award.

The Anglican Foundation of Canada
• The Anglican General Bursary Trust – is for theological students studying toward ordination who will be attending a theological college in Canada (bursaries are not given for undergraduate ). It is funded from the Oonah Bishop Fund, the Jean Grant Foundation, Anglican General Bursary Fund and designated bequests from the Woods, Owen, Paterson and the Bishop Marsh funds.
• The Anglican Graduate Award Trust is for advanced theological study at the post-graduate level with a view to a teaching and research career in a Canadian Anglican Theological school. Applicants are required to have already completed a university degree (B.A. or equivalent) and a professional degree (M.Div. or equivalent) and be ordained in the Anglican Church of Canada. Bursaries are not given for Doctor of Ministry degrees. Applicants should have at least four years professional experience in ordained ministry in a parish.
• The Catholic Apostolic Universal Trust Fund – also designates funds each year to each of the above trusts.

The Fund for Theological Education
• Congregational Fellowships provide substantial aid to first-year seminarians 35 years of age or younger through partnerships between FTE and individual congregations. Students must be nominated by their congregations.
• Ministry Fellowships provide financial support to enhance the formation of ministerial leadership for second-year seminarians. For full-time students 35 years of age or younger in Master of Divinity programs at institutions accredited by the Association of Theological Schools. Students must be nominated by the dean or president of their seminary.
• Fellowships Plus provides information about financial resources for theological students beyond those offered by FTE and individual theological institutions. Sources of financial assistance in Fellowships Plus can be searched alphabetically, by keyword, and by specific categories. They include aid offered by various church denominations as well as particular resources for women, racial ethnic minorities, undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, postdoctoral, and international students. The resources have been verified with the organization or individual offering the aid. However, details can change, and persons seeking financial aid should keep this is mind when contacting any of these sources.

The BC Paraplegic Foundation
• Bursaries are available to students who have a physical disability. Bursaries are awarded on merit, with preference given to individuals with a disability. Recipients must be Canadian citizens or Landed immigrants, residents of BC and must be attending/planning to attend a post-secondary educational institution in BC. Applicants who do not plan to attend facilities in BC must submit an explanatory letter. Under exceptional circumstances, the BCPF Bursary Committee may approve an award to a student in an out of Province or a non-Canadian educational facility.

Centennial Bursary Fund
• In 1990, St. George’s United Church established the Centennial Bursary Fund on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. Bursaries starting at $700 per award are granted primarily to candidates for the ministry to assist in completing their educational qualifications for ordination and pastoral ministry.
• Individual awards, which are granted after careful consideration at the discretion of the Committee, are based upon financial needs of the candidates, their ability and promise.
• To qualify for assistance, applicants must be either:
- Candidates or inquirers for ministry in the United Church of Canada, who are registered in a campus based ordination program at a United Church Theological School.
- An ordained minister in the United Church of Canada who is in the active process of post-graduate theological studies.

ATLA (American Theological Library Association)
The Publications Committee of the American Theological Library Association (ATLA) invites applications from bibliographers and indexers in the fields of religious studies/theology for the 2005 grant-in-aid award of up to $1,500. The ATLA Bibliography Grant is given annually by the ATLA Publications Committee to one or more bibliographers or indexers to aid in the development of a work that provides access to a significant body of literature within the fields of theological and/or religious studies. The scope, subject matter, length, and format are broadly conceived, with the intent of encouraging bibliographical essays or annotated bibliographies, especially by persons undertaking their first major project in this area. This grant is open to applicants inside and outside of ATLA.
ATLA reserves the right of first refusal for all projects receiving grants. The application deadline is January 15. The recipient of this grant will be selected by the Publications Committee. Applicants will be notified of the decision of the Publications Committee by March 1st. The funding granted will be distributed to the recipient within two weeks of the Committee’s decision.

Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA)
The mandate of CHHA is to encourage awareness of hearing loss and to advocate self-help for hard of hearing or deafened people. Its aim is to achieve full hearing accessibility in Canadian society. The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association Foundation (CHHAF) was established to create a perpetual financial legacy to support the activities of CHHA, and create specific initiatives for hard of hearing or deafened persons in Canada. The Algar family wishes to continue to support the work of their parents, particularly their father Frank Algar, who was a strong advocate of the rights of hard of hearing people and had great faith in young people.
The purpose of the Scholarship Program is to offer financial assistance and recognition to hard of hearing and deafened students registered in a full time program at a recognized Canadian college or university, in any area of study, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a diploma or degree. Again this year two awards of $1,000 will be granted.
Applicants are requested to read the criteria for eligibility (available in #103 – Financial Aid Office) and to provide all the information required. The selection of award recipients will be made by the Scholarship Committee. The decisions of the Committee are final. Kinsmen Bursary Program
In memory of Hal Rogers, founder of the Kinsmen & Kinette Clubs of Canada, who passed away in September 1994 at the age of 95, the Kinsmen of Langley, Kinsmen Club of Aldergrove and Kinette Club of Langley are proud to support the Kinsmen and Kinettes Bursaries, a program of the Hal Rogers Endowment Fund, whose mandate is to promote, encourage and sponsor educational programs and activities.
Throughout his life, Hal Rogers believed in the value of education. His leadership in the furtherance of education for young people was recognized by the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation, which named him the first recipient of the coveted Lamp of Learning Award in 1950.
Through the fund, financial assistance is available for students in their quest for higher learning at a recognized university, community college, technical institute and other schools for advanced education. The fund will award $1,000 bursaries to successful applicants.
Applicants must be in the process of graduating from high school, OR be currently registered at a post-secondary institution. Information and application packages for the fund are available in secondary schools, colleges, and universities across the country. The criteria with which applicants will be evaluated are contained in the application package. Application deadline is February 1st.
Successful applicants are chosen by a national board of trustees and are based on the individual’s community and school involvement, knowledge of the Kin association, and need for financial support in order to pursue further education. Successful applicants are selected each spring for the upcoming school year.

The W.L. Mackenzie King Memorial Scholarships
The Mackenzie King Scholarships were established as an independent trust under the will of the late Rt. Hon. William Mackenzie King (1874-1950).
Two classes of Mackenzie King Scholarship are available to graduates of Canadian universities: the Open Scholarship and the Traveling Scholarship. Both are to support graduate study.
The Open Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in any discipline, in Canada or elsewhere. One Open Scholarship is awarded each year. The value has recently been about $7,000 but it is subject to change.
The Traveling Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in the United States or the United Kingdom in the areas of international relations or industrial relations. Recently four scholarships of $9,000 each have been awarded annually, but the number and the amount are subject to change.
A scholarship is available from the Mackenzie King Scholarship Trust for a graduate of Harvard University to pursue graduate studies at a Canadian university. Further information about this scholarship is available from Harvard University, to which application must be made.

Scholarship for Study at Ecole Biblique
• The Board of the Canadian Friends of the Ecole Blblique (CFEB) has established a scholarship to encourage Canadians to study and to do research at the Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem.
• Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant. If no qualified candidates from Canada are available, the monies in a given year may go to a candidate from a third world country who is recommended by the Academic Director of the Ecole Blblique.
• Applicants must apply independently to the Ecole Biblique (see www.ebaf.edu/) and must have been accepted by the Ecole Biblique into a program of study or to conduct research by the time that the award is granted.
• Applicants must demonstrate financial need. It is intended that this scholarship will supplement other sources of income. A scholarship will normally be awarded in the range of $2,000 to $7,000, depending on need. It can be renewed.
• Special consideration will be given to women and to individuals who would not have other sources of support available to them. Members of religious communities, diocesan clergy and lay students are eligible.
• Monies will be paid directly to the Ecole Biblique for payment of fees, tuition and board and room. CFEB does not give money directly to applicants.
Applications, in French or in English, are to be sent to the President of the Canadian Friends of Ecole Biblique. Candidates should submit:
- A curriculum vitae (Please include SIN number since this is needed for reporting to Revenue Canada).

The Leonard Foundation Financial Assistance Program
• The Leonard Foundation scholarships are awarded to students enrolled or enrolling in a post secondary institution that is a member of the association of Colleges and Universities in Canada and is open to all without restriction save and except an academic standard. An applicant must be a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant.
• Students must be enrolled in their first undergraduate program as a full-time student. A student is considered to be full-time if he/she has enrolled for a program’s full year credit. Only students pursuing a B.Ed or M.Div are eligible for continuing support.
• All applicants will be considered but preference will be given to daughters or sons of ordained clergy, licensed elementary or secondary school teachers, Canadian military personnel, graduates of a Canadian Military College, members of the Engineering Institute of Canada and members of the Mining and Metallurgical Institute of Canada. Preference is also given to those who have previously received an award from The Leonard Foundation.
• The value of the award is usually $1,000.00 for those who do not need to set up a second residence to attend university and $1,500.00 for those who do. These amounts may vary according to the final decisions of the General Committee. Approximately 140 awards are made annually.
• Successful applicants are expected to obtain employment during free time to help defray the costs of their education. In addition, they must participate regularly in athletic, fitness or military activities. Personal qualities showing a potential for leadership are also a requirement.
• Colonel Reuben Wells Leonard wanted this financial assistance to go to individuals who, without it, would not be able to obtain a degree. For that reason, a true financial need must be demonstrated. Eglinton St. George’s Centennial Bursaries
To qualify, applicants must be either:
• Candidates or inquirers for ministry in the United Church of Canada, who are registered in a campus-based ordination program at a United Church Theological School.
• An ordained minister in The United Church of Canada who is in the active process of postgraduate theological studies.
Individual awards are granted after careful consideration at the discretion of the Committee and are based upon financial needs of the candidates, their ability and promise. Bursary applications are available in the VST Financial Aid Office, Room 103. Deadline: September 30.

General Commission on Archives and History
• Racial/Ethnic History Research Grant – Awarded for research in the history and heritage of ethnic groups in the American United Methodist tradition. One grant of $1500 or two grants of $750 each may be given. Deadline: December 31 of each year; recipients are announced by May 1 of the next year.
• The Jesse Lee Prize – Awarded once every four years to a serious, book-length monograph in Methodist history. The General Commission will assist in arranging for the publication of the winning manuscript and provide up to $200 for that purpose. Deadline: October 1, 2006, winner will be announced in early 2007.
• John Harrison Ness Memorial Award – An annual award of $200 (first prize) and $100 (second prize) may be given to M.Div. students who submit the best papers on some aspect of United Methodist history broadly conceived. Deadline: February 1 of each year; winners are notified by May of that year.
• Women in United Methodist History Research Grant – Provides seed money for research projects relating specifically to the history of women in the United Methodist Church or its antecedents. One grant of $1000 or two grants of $500 each may be awarded each year. Deadline: December 31 of each year; grant recipients are notified by May 1 of the next year.
• Women in United Methodist History Writing Award – One award of $250 may be given each year for an original manuscript, not longer than twenty pages, on the history of women in The United Methodist Church or its antecedents. Deadline: May 1 of each year; the winner is announced in September of that year.

Canadian Unitarian Council/Percy Simpson Bailey Bursaries
To assist Canadian Unitarians with expenses incurred annually while studying for the ministry in their second and subsequent years. In your application, you must include, along with one copy of the attached application form and financial disclosure statements:
- A letter indicating your interest in and involvement with Unitarian (Universalism).
- A brief biographical sketch.
- Mail a certified copy of all your post-secondary transcripts.
- If you have been accepted by the UUA’s Ministry and Professional Leadership (MAPL) office into Candidacy Status, provide a letter from the department confirming this fact.
- A letter of recommendation from the governing body of your local congregation, minister or resident professional.
- A letter from a faculty advisor attesting to your progress to date with your ministerial studies.
- A completed financial disclosure statement.
If you are applying for a second or subsequent bursary, a new application form and a new set of financial disclosure statements must be submitted. You must also arrange for an updated transcript to be sent to us along with another faculty advisor “progress report.” The maximum number of years to receive a bursary is three.
The Theological Education Funds Committee will review applications. The CUC board at its May meeting will then consider the committee’s recommendations.

The Scripture Union Canada Scholarship
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage the brightest and best Canadian students to take a career as children’s evangelist/worker seriously as a career choice, and to encourage Canadian Colleges and Seminaries to take very seriously the importance of providing sound programs in children’s ministry.
The Scripture Union Canada Scholarship will be awarded to a student who is a Canadian citizen or a landed immigrant entering an accredited program at a Canadian seminary or Bible college, with the possibility of renewal subject to the student’s maintaining satisfactory academic standing and receiving the commendation of the Principal or Dean.
A Scripture Union scholar will be required each year to take at least one course in children’s ministry and undertake work-study (placement) with a children’s ministry component. The placement will be chosen in consultation with the Principal or Dean and with SU.
Applicants must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants and intend to be engaged in children’s ministry in Canada upon graduation.
The award is contingent on the candidate’s acceptance at a Bible college or seminary offering a program which, in the opinion of SU, will qualify the student to minister to children. The award will be administered by the Bible college or seminary. The funds will be applied to fees, with any residue paid out for living expenses.
The Scripture Union scholar will be invited annually to meet the SU constituency, and to report on his/her progress.
